Wesley Scott Demont died peacefully on January 13, 2023 in Gardner MA. Wes was born in Fitchburg MA in 1936. He is survived by his beloved wife Anne (Bourque) of 66 years, his children Eleanor of Northfield, MA, Kenneth of Nashua, NH, and Andrew of Winchendon, MA., as well as four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, William.
During summers while in high school, Wes worked with the gardener at the Crocker Mansion on Prospect St. After graduating, Mr. Crocker asked him what his plans were and suggested that he go down to the mill and “tell them I sent you.” Naturally, Wes was hired and spent the rest of his working years as a papermaker at the Crocker Paper Company, and its various owners through the years, retiring in 1999.
In the early 1960’s, Wes proudly served in the National Guard for 5 years.
Wes and Anne loved their home on Parson Circle, which was the hub of family gatherings for over 60 years. Wes always maintained a productive vegetable garden in the backyard and enjoyed sitting there with his pipe and a beer, while barbecuing on quiet summer evenings. In addition to gardening, Wes was an avid, lifelong outdoorsman – hunting, camping, fishing, golfing, canoeing, biking, and particularly skiing, making his last run at Mount Wachusett at the age of 80. He was a long time member of the Fitchburg Sportman’s Club, Montachusett Ski Club, and Maplewood Golf League. For over a decade he also participated in several local canoe races, including the Athol River Rat Race with his son, Andrew.
The greatest legacy Wes passed onto his children and grandchildren was a love of nature and appreciation for being in the out-of-doors.
