Heaven has called an angel back home. Vaselecke“Bessie” Xarras, of Fitchburg MA, has passed away at the age of 93.
Her final days were spent according to her wishes inside her family home surrounded by those she loved most.
Bessie was born on June 7, 1929 in Fitchburg, the second daughter of the Harry and Eftehia (Geas) Xarras. One of 10 children, her family held a special place in her heart, and she lived her life caring for the people closest to her.
If you knew Bessie, you’d know she truly was an angel on Earth. She wasn’t only a mother and ”Yia Yia” to her own children and grandchildren, but to everyone in her family. With Bessie, there was more than enough love to go around, and she spread it generously. While she was quick to tell you how special you were (or more aptly how “marvelous” or “gorgeous” you were), she was truly the special one. They don’t make them like Bessie Xarras anymore. Thankfully, her legacy will live on in the generations of children she helped raise—all of which she considered her own.
Bessie was a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Fitchburg where she served a president of the daughters of Penelope. Aside from her service to family, church, and community, Bessie worked as a key punch operator at Fort Devens. Prior to that, she helped run the family-owned Buttercup Tea Room in Lunenberg, where hopefully, many can look back on the fond memory of her familiar face. Bessie can also be remembered for her love of ice cream and the Patriots—along with her obsession with the Celtics and the Red Sox. Remember her pride. Remember her beauty. Remember her grace.
Bessie is survived by her sons, Dean Vallis of New Jersey, James Vallis and his wife, Natasha of Florida, grandchildren, Sophia, Dimitri, Beau, Cole, 7 great grandchildren, siblings Leo Xarras, Alexandra Pappas, Margarita Palgakis.
Bessie is predeceased by her brothers, John, Forteos, James, Peter, Angelos “Van” Xarras, sister, Athena Liatsis and her daughter in law, Shirley Vallis
