A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 11, at 11:00 am in the Holy Family of Nazareth Church, 750 Union Street, Leominster. Burial will follow in Saint Leo’s Cemetery, Leominster. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, March 10 from 5-8pm in Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Holy Family of Nazareth Church, 750 Union Street, Leominster, MA 01453.



OBITUARY

Leominster – Thomas Francis Burns of Leominster, died of cancer at the age of 67, surrounded and held by the love of his family, in the early hours of March 6, 2016.

Tom was born on November 6, 1948 in Leominster, and brought great joy to his parents, Thomas and Elizabeth (Frazier) Burns. The oldest of nine children, Tom could often be found playing sports and having fun with his six brothers and two sisters in the vibrant neighborhood community on Litchfield Street. Tom excelled at baseball as a catcher in Babe Ruth, American Legion, and at Saint Bernard’s High School, where he also played football with great heart and passion.

Tom graduated from the Culinary Institute of America and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy on the USS Barry, as a chef, traveling around the world. He also served in the National Guard. Tom was a Postal Clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in Leominster for 30 years. Tom was very active in the Leominster Adult Men’s Softball Association as a player, umpire, and groundskeeper. Known for his fairness and knowledge of the game, he was a well sought after umpire; he traveled around central Massachusetts umpiring various leagues and tournaments.

Tom spent his vacation time in Florida with his cousins, aunt, and uncle. He loved the sea and sun. He was active in the Knights of Columbus Cribbage League and the Saint Francis Horseshoe League. He was a daily communicant of the Holy Family of Nazareth Parish. Tom was also an active member of the Knights of the Poor Farm.

He was predeceased by his father Thomas and brother John. Tom leaves behind his mother, Elizabeth Burns of Leominster; brothers, Michael and wife Kriss Burns of Freemont, CA, Richard and wife Laura Burns of Leominster, sister Catherine and husband Mark LaCouture of Leominster; brother, Dr. Timothy and wife Ilsa Burns of Waco, TX; sister, Melanie Burns and husband Paul Harris of Wiscasset, ME; brothers, Colonel Francis and wife Dr. Darlene Burns of Cibolo, TX and Patrick and wife Theresa Burns of Shrewsbury. Tom was the beloved uncle of Eileen Burns-Jin, Jason and Rebecca LaCouture, Emily Palumbo, and Alyssa Burns, Brian and Garret Burns, David and Daniel Burns, Conor, Cormac, Cavan Burns; six grand nieces and nephews.
