June 10, 1929 — February 26, 2018

Friends and family may pay their respects on Friday, March 2nd from 4 to 7pm at Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd, Fitchburg. A Funeral Mass will be held in St Joseph’s Church in Fitchburg on Saturday March 3rd at 10am with burial service following at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. All are welcome. For those who wish may make donations, please contribute to the Alzheimer’s Association of Massachusetts 309 Waverley Oaks Rd, Waltham.

The family wishes to thank Life Cares Center of Leominster for their compassionate care during the last weeks of his life.



Fitchburg – Russell Joseph Sontag, 88, loving husband of Gloria (Bellabarba), died Monday, February 26, 2018 after a short illness. He was born June 10, 1929 in Fitchburg MA, the youngest child of Frederick and Emma (Niles) Sontag of Fitchburg MA

Russell was a life long resident of Fitchburg and was a 1947 graduate of Fitchburg High School. He served his country with honor for two years during the Korean War.

He was employed as Head Receiver for 45 years at Aubuchon Hardware in Westminster. He was an avid sports fan, bowler and stamp collector. He was also a passionate genealogist, often times traveling long distances for his research. In 2001, he took his family to Sparneck Germany to visit the Sontag hometown where his ancestors were born, a trip he reminisced about many times. He was a member at St. Joseph’s Church in Fitchburg.

Along with his wife of 56 years, Russell is survived by three sons: David and his wife Linda Moynihan of Littleton; Andrew and his wife Tina of West Boylston and Kenneth of Leominster. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren: Brian and his wife Kelley of Plainville, Vanessa of West Boylston, Christopher of Medford and Tyler of Waltham. He is predeceased by 5 siblings: Wallace, Raymond, Beatrice, Frederick and Agnes.
