Calling hours will be held in Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg on Monday, February 27, from 4-7pm. The funeral Mass will be held in Our Lady of the Lake Church, 1400 Main St., Leominster, on Tuesday, February 28 at 10am. Burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Hope Hospice 9470 HealthPark Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33908.
Leominster – Ronald N. “Ron” Merkel, passed away peacefully on February 14, in his Fort Meyers, Florida home at the age of 78.
Ron graduated as Valedictorian from Templeton High School, and later from the GE Apprentice Program. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering from Fitchburg State College and his Master’s Degree in Business Science from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Ron was employed by GE in various managerial positions, retiring after 42 years as the Manager of Navy Sourcing in Fitchburg. He was a member of ELFUN and was very involved in Special Olympics and youth sports. Ron was on the board of directors at the Fitchburg YMCA as well as a lifelong member of the Elks. He was an avid skier and golfer, and enjoyed doing so with his family. Ron was a former member of the Westminster Country Club.
He leaves his wife of 53 years, Helen (Connor) Merkel; a son, Peter Merkel and his wife Mary of Lunenburg; his granddaughter Maegan Merkel; sister Kathy Kozlowski and husband Edmond of Gardner; brother in law, George Connor of Gardner. Ron also leaves his nephews and many cousins.
