Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 25th from 12:00-1:30pm in Brandon Funeral Home 305 Wanoosnoc Rd. Fitchburg. A service will begin at 1:30pm. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery in Fitchburg
Fitchburg – Robert A. Mattia, 95, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2019 in the Wingate at Sudbury Nursing Facility.
He was born in New York City on April 6, 1923, a son of the late Dr. Anthony Mattia and Grace (McDermott) Mattia. He was a 1941 graduate of Fitchburg High School, where he starred on the baseball team. He proudly served his country as a Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class in the US Navy aboard the USS Greene, and the USS Mount McKinley during WWII.
He earned his Associates Degree from Nichols College, and for over 40 years Robert spent his career as a purchasing agent for the David Gessner Textile and Machinery Company in Worcester.
He was a parishioner of Saint Anthony di Padua Church in Fitchburg. Robert was an avid bowler, reader of WWII and baseball history, and a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees.
He is survived by his two children, Dr. Anthony Mattia and his wife Darlyne of Sudbury; a daughter, Marybeth Magnan and her husband James of Middletown, RI; three grandchildren, Ali, Emily, and Eric Mattia; his sister Thea (Mattia) Barnard of Virginia Beach, VA, and many nieces and nephews.
Robert was predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years, Norma (Barker) Mattia in 2011, his daughter Michelle Mattia and his granddaughter Jamie Magnan.
