Visitation will be at Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, Fitchburg, Ma. 01420 on Friday August 26, 2016 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Burial will follow in Saint Leo’s Cemetery following a ceremony in Brandon Funeral Home on Saturday August 27, 2016 at 12:00pm.
Richard F. Smith passed away on August 21, 2016. Richard was the son of Michael J. Smith and Alice L. Carville. Dick was born in Westborough Massachusetts.
Dick attended Westborough High, and was class historian for the class of 1947.
He joined Westinghouse Electric Supply in 1947, and stayed with them until 1962. He took 1951 – 1953 off to serve in the Korean Conflict, working as a cryptographer in Germany. He married Kathleen Ann Kliskey in February 1951. Kathleen predeceased him in January 1968. Richard left Westinghouse in 1962 to purchase Gettens Electric Company, with his good friend and business partner James Botts. Richard was President and CEO of Gettens until 1996. During this time Richard was very involved with the Leominster / Fitchburg YMCA, Oak Hill Country Club, and the Leominster Lodge of Elks, and Rotary, serving in various board positions and committees. Richard married Mary C. Fratantonio in January 1969. Dick and Mary retired to Florida in 1996, to enjoy golf and always had some of their children and grandchildren visiting. There are not enough words to describe the tremendous impact that Richard Smith had on so many lives. He was a truly loving, giving man, and his loss is felt deeply by many.
Richard is survived by his wife Mary, and his children Kathleen “Kitty” Murray, Eileen (John) Arsenault, Michael Martel, Maureen (Philip Michael ) Normandin, Joseph (Shannon ) Martel, Elizabeth ( John ) Mattero, Patricia ( William ) Healey, James ( Anne ) Martel, Richard F. Smith Jr., John “Jack” Martel, and Claudia ( Jeff ) Tocci. He also leaves 33 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandson. Dick was always very proud of his family. He was predeceased by his sons Richard Martel and Steven Martel.
