Raymond Thomas Powers, of Lunenburg, passed away on May 31, shortly before his 85th birthday.
Ray was born in Fitchburg to Raymond T. (Sr.) and Helen (McElroy) Powers. Surviving are his wife Mary, son Michael, brother Robert and sister in law, Peggy. He is predeceased by a sister Mary E. Farnsworth.
After graduating from Saint Bernard’s High School, Ray enlisted in the US Air Force and was stationed in England for several years. A keen interest in “big rigs” led to five years of driving throughout the 48 contiguous states as a long-haul mover. On one of those journeys he met his future wife, and they married in 1967 in Pennsylvania. Afterwards, Ray owned a local moving and furniture delivery business in Fitchburg. Later on, he returned to driving across all of New England and New York until his retirement.
He loved gardening, going to the beach and traveling. Initially raised as a Boston Braves fan, Ray later became fond of the Red Sox and enjoyed taking his family to Fenway. He was thrilled to attend the 2013 World Series for games 4 and 5 in St. Louis to cheer on the Sox.
