The funeral will be held Thursday, December 8, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Donations may be made to VNA Hospice Care, 120 Thomas St., Worcester, MA 01608.



FITCHBURG – Norman O. Riedel, 94, of 353 St. Joseph Ave., died Saturday, December 3, 2016 at home after a long illness.  He was born In Fitchburg on March 15, 1922, son of Otto K. and Lena M. (Langer) Riedel.  He graduated from Fitchburg High School with the class of 1940.

Norman enlisted in the U.S. Navy on October 7, 1942 and was discharged on January 8, 1946.  During that time, he served in the European-African-Middle Eastern area as well as the Asiatic Pacific area.  While in the Navy, he was assigned to the U.S. LSTs 392, 378 and 1064.  During the invasion of Sicily, he was wounded in N. Africa, hospitalized and returned to duty aboard the LST 378.  He also took part in the invasion of Anzio, Italy and was part of the invasion force to invade France on “D” Day, June 6, 1944.  He was then reassigned to LST 1064 to take part in the invasion of Japan.

Norman married Albina Therriault of Lunenburg on October 26, 1946.  Albina passed away in 2012.  They were blessed with six children, Robert N. died in 1968, David and his wife, Rima, of Manchester, CT, Joanne Riedel and her husband, Dave Dimauro of Barkhamsted, Ct, Richard K., who lived with him, Janice and her husband, Vincent O’Connell of Westminster, and Donna and her husband, Steven Boucher, of Hubbardston, three grandchildren, Jonathan Riedel and his wife, Leah, of Hudson, and Alexander and Jacob Boucher of Hubbardston and a great grandchild, Matthew of Hudson.

His brother, Raymond, served in the Army Air Corp, serving in China.  He died in 2002.  He is survived by his two sisters, Constance Spanier of Ocala, FL and Eleanor Griehshammer of Danvers and a sister-in-law, Alice Therriault of Fitchburg, as well as several nieces and nephews.

After his discharge from the Navy, he worked at G&H Mfg., Co. and the American Can Co. in Fitchburg and after 15 years went to work for GenRad in Concord.  He retired in 1985. During his retirement, he and his wife Albina, enjoyed taking trips throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Norman was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post 327, Disabled Veterans, and Knights of Columbus #99.

The family would like to thank Dr. Raymond Wolejko and Dr. Robotis for their exceptional care., VNA Hospice of Worcester, especially Moira and Erin, who were truly amazing nurses, and the numerous people he chanced to meet, who thanked him for his service to our country and on many occassions would pay for his meal.
