Townsend – Martha F. (Farrar) Leahy, 82, of Townsend, passed away June 29, 2016 in Nashoba Valley Medical Center.

Martha was born in Mason, NH on May 22, 1934, a daughter of the late Carl and Helen (Higgins) Farrar. She graduated from the Chandler School for Women in Boston. She starred on the softball and basketball teams. During her time at the Chandler School, Martha did some modeling. For years she worked as the secretary for the Superintendant of Schools in Townsend and later as the Superintendant until her retirement. She was a parishioner of Saint John’s Church. Martha will be fondly remembered for her favorite quote, “It’s a great life, if you don’t weaken.”

She was a kind, selfless, loving, and vibrant woman. Martha loved nothing more than spending time with her family; She took great pride in watching her grandchildren, who were accomplished athletes, and attended all of their sporting events.  She was generous and very down to Earth. She enjoyed the ocean, bird watching-especially her cardinals, celebrating holidays with family traditions, gardening, and walking. She will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of meeting her.

Martha leaves her husband Robert Leahy of Townsend; son, John Leahy and Lola Holden of Townsend; daughter, Denise Mann and her husband Ed of Westminster; brother, Lyman Farrar and his wife, Betty, of Sarasota, FL and two sisters, Nancy Rutherford of San Diego, CA and Julia Verney and her husband, Guy, of Avon, CT; grandchildren, Alan Mann, Nisa Mann, and Shannon Leahy.

A graveside service will be held on July 8th at 11:00am in Hillside Cemetery in Townsend with Lyman Farrar and Harry Marshall officiating. Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg is directing arrangements.
