Calling hours will be held at Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg, Sunday, October 14 from 1:00 – 4:00pm
The funeral will be held at Saint Anthony Church, 84 Salem St., Fitchburg, Monday, October 15 at 10:00am. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.
Fitchburg – Joseph A. Carbone, 78, passed away at home on October 8, 2018.
Joe was born in San Diego, California on December 5, 1939, son of Frank and Raffaela (Ciaccia) Carbone. He is survived by his daughter Lisa Freda of Westminster, MA, his two grandsons, Erick and Jacob Freda; brother Vincent Carbone and wife Linda of North Hampton, NH; his sister Elizabeth Carbone of Fitchburg, MA, his niece Jennifer Gariepy of Fitchburg, MA and nephews, Michael Carbone of Fitchburg, MA and Steven Carbone of New Bedford, MA. Joseph is predeceased by a brother, Frank Louis Carbone of Fitchburg, MA.
A 1957 graduate of Fitchburg High School, Joe continued his formal studies at Saint Anslem College and obtained his Master’s Degree at Penn State University; including the University’s Advanced Police Executive Development program.
Joe served on the Fitchburg Police Department for a total of 34 years. Servicing the Department as a Detective, he was appointed the title of “Permanent Full Time Police Captain” in 1992. Though he retired in March of 2007, his investigative work continued and in 2008, he was awarded the “Superintendent’s Commendation”, by the Massachusetts State Police, for his collaborative contribution that brought justice to a 1970’s, “cold-case” murder.
Captain Carbone’s charismatic nature brought him a plethora of life experiences. A trophy winning weight lifter, Joe was a Co-Founder of the Fitchburg Weight Lifting Club. He was the owner of various race dogs and horses. Joe enjoyed traveling, community events, dancing and quality time with family and friends. His smile, adventurous spirit and joyful nature will be greatly missed by many.
