John (Mitch) Kelly

John Mitchell Kelly (Mitch) , 73,  died on May 27, 2024 at his home  in Leominster MA after a brief illness. He was born in Fitchburg MA on September 12, 1950, the son of  Edmond and Christine Kelly. 

Raised in Fitchburg, he was a graduate of Applewild School in Fitchburg, Sterling School, Craftsbury Common, Vermont and Franklin Pierce College in Ridge New Hampshire where he excelled as a varsity level hockey goalie being named to the “Who’s Who” of college athletics.

“Mitch” received his Masters Degree in Sociology and Criminology from Anna Maria College in Paxton, Massachusetts.  

Mitch, was a dedicated and passionate youth coach, poured his heart into nurturing young athletes in his community. Whether on the soccer field, the hockey rink, or the baseball diamond, he instilled not only the skills of the game but also the values of teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship. His unwavering commitment left an indelible mark on the lives of countless kids, shaping them into confident and resilient individuals

Mitch dedicated 35 years of his life to serving as a police officer in the city of Fitchburg, with the majority of his service at the rank of Sergeant. His colleagues and community members admired him for his deeply caring nature, great sense of humor, unwavering devotion to his family, and his long and distinguished career in service to the community. 

Mitch worked at Mount Wachusett Community College as an adjunct professor since 2009. His teachings focused on social justice through  sociology courses and past experience as a former Sergeant for Fitchburg.

Mitch's passion in teaching helped students from the community develop a better understanding of the world around them. His methods were impactful and brought him great joy and inspired his teaching style every semester

Mitch was an avid sports enthusiast and loved watching the Boston Bruins, the Boston Red Sox, and, above all, his beloved New England Patriots

He is survived by his wife, Julie Kilfoyle-Kelly of Leominster; his son, John Kelly Jr.  and of Leominster, MA; his Daughter, Amy Kelly of Leominster, MA , his stepson, Shawn Kilfoyle of Winchendon MA, 5 granddaughters,  6 grandsons, and a greatgrandson born May 3rd, 2024, Sawyer Mitchell Kelly.  He also survived by his brothers, Edmond Kelly of Bellevue, ID and Robert Kelly of Great Barrington, MA and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Mitch was preceeded in dealth by his parents, Edmond and Christine Kelly, his son Christopher Kelly of Leominster, his sister, Charlotte Lally of Friday Harbor, Washington, and his stepson Jason Kilfoyle of Winchendon MA. 

Calling hours will be held Monday, June 3, 2024, from 4 PM to 7 PM at Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, Fitchburg.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 at 11 AM at Christ Church 569 Main St., Fitchburg.

Burial will follow at New Cemetery, Old Nims Rd., Ashburnham
