Calling hours will be held in Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg on Sunday, February 26 from 9:00 -11:00am. A service will begin at 11:00am. Burial will be held privately.
John Frank Bovenzi, 88, of Lunenburg, MA died surrounded by family on February 15th. He was born in Worcester, MA on March 12, 1928, the son of Frank G. Bovenzi and Anna (Mazzaferro) Bovenzi.
John was a graduate of Leominster High School, where he played varsity baseball for three years. After graduating, John joined the Marines, afterwards going to college on the GI Bill. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst with a degree in engineering.
John always knew what he wanted, particularly when he married Barbara Ellen Burchstead in 1951. They remained happily married for 64 years, until Barbara passed away last year.
Soon after they were married, John and Barbara moved to Downey, CA where John worked for North American Aviation and helped develop the Navaho, an intercontinental cruise missile. John received a Masters Degree in Structural Engineering from the University of Southern California.
John and Barbara moved back east to Agawam, MA, when John was offered a job at Kaman Aircraft, working on designing helicopters. While there he received a Ph. D in Structural Engineering from the University of Connecticut.
Seven years later, John and Barbara moved to Andover, MA, where they lived for the next 39 years and raised their three sons. John worked for several years at Avco Corporation, designing reentry vehicles. In 1968 John joined Raytheon where he was an integral part of the team that developed the Patriot missile from start to finish. John retired in 1991.
In 2002 John and Barbara moved to Lunenburg, MA to be near their extended family.
John enjoyed cooking for his family, gardening, playing chess and golf as well as racing his champion pigeons.
John was predeceased by his wife, Barbara, and son, David.
He is survived by two sons John (Erica), of Alexandria, VA and Daniel of Oakland, CA, a brother, Frank Bovenzi, of Leominster, MA, two sisters, Madelyn Mammone of Groton, CT and Constance Chartrand of Leominster, MA, two grandsons, Adam J. Bovenzi (Lindsay) and Eric J. Bovenzi (Stephanie), a step- grandson, Gregory J. Cooper and two great-grandsons, Maxwell J. Bovenzi and Franklin R. Bovenzi.
