Joan A. Thomas

Joan A. Thomas, 90, passed away Saturday, January 6, 2024, in UMASS Medical Center, Worcester, surrounded by family.

Mrs. Thomas was born on July 26, 1933, in Fitchburg, daughter of Uuno and Alma (Luoma) Niemi and resided in Fitchburg until 2020 when she moved with her daughter to Lancaster. Joan was a 1951 graduate of Fitchburg High School where she was a majorette and very active in many clubs and committees. She continued for 70 years, planning their class reunions. She worked in the catalog and circulation departments at the Fitchburg State library for 22 years before her retirement. She was a lifelong devoted member of Christ Episcopal Church in Fitchburg serving on the Altar Guild, multiple committees and as an usher for more than 25 years with her husband. In 2017, Joan and George received the Nancy Bullock Service Award at Christ Church.

Mrs. Thomas was predeceased by her loving husband, George, of 61 years in 2017. She leaves behind her son, David Thomas and his wife, Deborah of Shrewsbury; her daughter, Nancy Thomas (Dean Larkin) of Lancaster; three grandchildren, James Thomas and his wife, Britta from Colorado, Jennifer Thomas (Chello Gonzalez) of Fitchburg and Lauren Sweeney (Tyrie Osby) of Fitchburg; four great grandchildren, Ethan Gonzalez, Nyla and Amelia Osby and Alessia Thomas.

A service will be held on Friday, January 12, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 569 Main St., Fitchburg.

There will be an informal calling hour at 10:00 a.m. in the Bennett Room of the church.

The burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery immediately following the service.
