The funeral will be held Wednesday March 28, 2018 from Brandon Funeral Home, Fitchburg with a Mass at 10 am in St. Bernard’s Parish at St. Camillus Church, 333 Mechanic St., Fitchburg. Burial is in St. Bernard’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday from 4-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Kayla Kelly to J. FITCHBURG – James T. Connolly, 80, of Fitchburg, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family March 24, 2018 in Boston after an illness.
He was born July 21, 1937 in New York, NY, the son of Thomas F. and Irene (McCarthy) Connolly. He was a 1956 graduate of St. Bernard’s High School where he played basketball and football. In 1956, he was named to the All Star Basketball Team for Worcester County.
He was in the National Guard for six years, stationed at Ft. Devens, and qualified as a Marksman Shooter.
As a young man, he apprenticed as a plumber at T. F. Connolly and Sons Plumbing, his father’s company. He was a Master Plumber, starting Connolly Plumbing Co. He was a commercial plumber and worked all over New England for Cumberland Farms, Burger King and Friendly Restaurants. He mentored many young men as plumbers for over 40 years and retired in July 2007.
He was a member of the Massachusetts Plumber’s Association, Irish-American Club, Eastwood Club and Fitchburg Elks. He was a member and board member of Hampshire Hills Athletic Club.
He was a devoted Catholic and member of both St. Bernard and St. Joseph parishes. He was very active in his children and grand children’s activities and sports.
He leaves his longtime loving companion of 37 years, Linda McPhee; three sons, James T. Connolly Jr and wife, Jacqueline, of Ashburnham, John P. Connolly of VA and Michael T. Connolly and wife Linda, of Stoughton; sisters, Mary Crank of Fitchburg and Judith Connolly of Malden; his former daughter-in-law, Karen Connolly; grandchildren, Katherine Connolly, Lauren Connolly, Alyssa King and husband Stew, Kristen LaRovere and husband Matt, Shawn Connolly, Michelle Connolly, Angela Connolly and Kayla Kelly, great grand children Maxwell and Jett King, and Linda’s Children, Amy McPhee Kelly of RI and Jason McPhee of Fitchburg. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Verock and a brother, Thomas Connolly.
