A funeral service will be held at The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1319 Main Street, Fitchburg on Tuesday, January 31st, at 11:00 am. Burial to follow at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Fitchburg. Calling hours will be held on Monday, January 30th, from 5-8pm. at The Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, Fitchburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1319 Main Street, Fitchburg or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis Tennessee, 38105.
James (Jimmy) George, age 72, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. He was bornin Fitchburg, Ma on October 29, 1944 to Harry and Georgianna (Costas) George. He was a lifelong Fitchburg resident, graduating from Fitchburg High School and Fitchburg State College. He continued his career in education in the Fitchburg Public Schools for thirty years as a history teacher. His best teaching memories were of the years where he taught and coached basketball at B.F. Brown Junior High School. He loved to share stories about his teaching and coaching experience and continued to stay in contact with students who became lifelong friends.
He was a lifelong member of The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and was active in his faith for many years, serving as an altar boy. He enthusiastically shared his faith and heritage with his children and grandchildren.
One of his many passions was Harness Racing. He was an owner, trainer and breeder of harness horses for more than 50 years. He was a licensed harness judge through the United StatesTrotting Association, judging races throughout Maine and New Hampshire. He also loved and never missed a year at the Rochester Fair in New Hampshire.
Nothing meant more to James than his family. He was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and Uncle. He will be remembered for his endless energy and passion for life. He lived every minute to the fullest, sharing his enthusiasm for life with everyone around him. He enjoyed long walks, car trips(especially during snow and ice storms) and family get togethers. He loved his grandchildren and was proud to visit them each and every day. He taught his grandson Jack to play soccer and was his biggest fan. His “job” in retirement was to pick his grandson up from school every day. He did this with great joy and love.
He is survived his loving wife of 40 years, Pamela (Higham) George, his daughter Christina Lewis and husband Michael Lewis, and their children Jack and James, and daughter Mary George.
He is also survived by his niece Georgia Amanatidis and her husband Pavlos Amanatidis and their children Christos, Zoe, Bobby and his wife Kaliopi, as well as their two children Pavlosand Georgia.
He leaves his nephew Larry Gianakis Sr. and niece Georgia Robideau; as well as four generations of great nieces, nephews,cousins, and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Mary Gianakis and her husband Peter Gianakis, and his brother Christos H. George.He was also predeceased by his niece Jean Gianakis Taylor.
