James D. Boulay

February 7, 1954 — December 31, 2024

Fitchburg

It is with profound sadness, we acknowledge the passing of James D. Boulay, affectionately known to many as "Boo," or "Grampy," who was born on February 7, 1954, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and passed away on December 31, 2024. James was a charismatic and compassionate man, who brought joy and laughter to all those who were fortunate enough to know him. His loving spirit and thoughtful nature were the hallmarks of his character and will be greatly missed.

James was a talented painter by profession, his canvas was as wide and varied as the buildings he worked on. One of his favorite jobs was maintaining the Elmwood on the southeastern coast of Maine, during the summer months he would take numerous trips to work on the vacation cottages at the Elmwood. On many occasions he would bring along his daughter so they could enjoy the nearby beaches and visit Funtown Amusement Park in Saco. James enjoyed being around the ocean and shared that love with his daughter Jodi.

He was a remarkable bowler from early an early age. When he was 16, he held the esteemed title of "King of the Hub" for his outstanding bowling skills, this achievement is bestowed upon the best bowler in the local men’s league. His fondness for bowling remained throughout his life, he was a fixture at Putnam’s bowling alley for many years. He also enjoyed playing softball and frequent visits to the racetrack. Alongside these hobbies, he also loved to cook and was a dedicated Yankees fan, much to the bemusement of his Massachusetts-based family.

He relished his time as a member of many local clubs, most recently the Southend Club and found great joy in the camaraderie of his fellow members.

James leaves behind his daughter Jodi Pompei and her husband Nicholas Pompei of Westminster, MA; his sister Donna Nolan of Fitchburg, MA; his brother Robert Boulay of Gardner, MA; his brother Paul Boulay of Gardner, MA; his aunt Marie Bedard of Fitchburg MA, and his beloved grandchildren Jackson and Gianna Pompei. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Boulay and Alice Boulay (Bedard) of Fitchburg, MA.

James could often be found watching the Yankees, Celtics or a Three Stooges marathon. However, there is nothing James loved more than his two grandchildren Jackson and Gianna. Nearly every morning and every night “Grampy” as they called him, would call just to check in, see how their games had gone, give a math test or even wager on a football or basketball game. They were his priority; this was evident by the countless photos of them plastered on his walls.

James was a compassionate and loving individual who found joy in the simple pleasures of life, particularly when it came to his grandkids, family, and friends. These were the aspects of life that mattered the most to him.
