Hubert Wirtz, Jr., affectionately known as Hubie, born on May 17, 1934, in Montreal, QC, Canada, transitioned to his eternal rest surrounded by family on September 20, 2023. A loving father, dedicated grandfather, and witty friend, Hubie brought joy and laughter to all who were blessed to know him. A resident of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, he was a man of immense generosity and dedication, attributes that were reflected in his unwavering commitment to his family, the heart of his existence.
In his professional life, Hubie was a skilled plasterer in the construction industry. His dedication to his craft was only surpassed by his passion for sports. An avid ice hockey player, he carried his love for the game from his native Montreal to the ice rinks of Massachusetts. He also enjoyed playing softball in Central Massachusetts, always the life of the team with his quick wit and known for his pitching skills. In retirement, he continued to share these passions through captivating stories, photography and attending his kid’s and grandkid’s sporting events.
Hubie was preceded in death by his parents Hubert Sr. and Therese Wirtz, his beloved wife Maximina Wirtz, and his dear daughter Michelle Wirtz. He was the cherished father to Oly Wirtz and Lesly Borges and was blessed with grandchildren Michael Lowe, Jennifer Lowe, Beverly Madden, Katherine Irizarry and Lily and Dylan Michales. Great grandchildren Lisette and Trevor Lowe, Silas Herndon, Micah Behenna and Emerson Madden. Of his nine siblings, he is survived by two brothers: Peter Wirtz of Fitchburg, and Lionel Wirtz of Winchendon, and one sister Andree Geiselman of New Hampshire; two brothers, John Wirtz and Louis Wirtz, and four sisters, Francine Perla, Gisele White, Lisa Bresnahan and Madeline Wirtz predeceased him.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Saint Joseph Church or St. Jude Children’s hospital.
Calling hours will take place on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at 5:00 pm at the Brandon Funeral Home, located at 305 Wanoosnoc Road, Fitchburg, Massachusetts, 01420. A Mass in Hubie's honor will be held on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at 11:00 am at St Joseph's Church, located at 49 Woodland Street, Fitchburg, Massachusetts, 01420. Burial services will be private.
