OBITUARY
Ashburnham – Gloria Daisy (Snow) Scanlon, 86, of Ashburnham, formerly of Ashby, passed away on August 18, in Wachusett Manor Nursing Home.
She was born in Boston, MA on August 6, 1931, a daughter of the late Clyde Snow and Greta (Hughes) Snow Venn Cornell. She grew up in Boston, Lynn, and Marshfield, where she graduated from High School with honors. She continued her education at Bridgewater State College and graduated with a Degree in Education. In 1954, she married Richard Scanlon, who predeceased her on August 24, 2003.
The family moved to Ashby, where she taught First Grade for seven years. Later, moving to Ashburnham, Gloria taught first, third, and fifth graders there, until her retirement from teaching.
After retiring, she taught soldiers at Fort Devens until it closed. Gloria then went to work for the IRS in Andover until her 74th birthday, finally starting the retirement long deserved.
Over many years, she traveled whenever possible, having visited Florida, Nevada, California, and Canada. She and her husband made many trips to Ireland, and also traveled to Romania. They had a sail boat for many years, taking the grandkids when ever possible to the boat in the summer. Gloria, along with her best friend, Eunice, rode a camel up a mountain while in the Canary Islands.
She loved to spend time with her family, always exchanging books, going to the movies, playing card games, and spending time at the beach. Even as late as last August, she enjoyed a swim in the ocean in Westport, MA. Gloria was a quiet, loving, caring mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, whose passing will leave a large emptiness in the family. We love you always the Great -Mema…
Gloria leaves her daughter, Virginia (Scanlon) and her husband Theodore Carlson, Jr. of Ashby; grandchildren, Jennifer (Carlson) Livingstone and husband Joshua of Westminster, Carolyn (Carlson) Bessett and husband Eric of Ashburnham, and Danielle (Carlson) Gramolini and husband Christopher of Templeton; great grandchildren, Daisy, Kyleen, Ashley, Madelyn, Anthony, Zachary, Hannah, Nicholas, Mathew, Alexander, Abigail, and Ryan; a niece, Margaret (Izzo) Donahue of FL, and her brother William Venn and wife Pat of Lynn.
She was predeceased by her grandson Michael S. Carlson on June 15, 2016, and her sister Loretta (Snow) Izzo.
Her giving and loving heart extended even after her life here with her family was over, by donating her body to Harvard Medical School.
