FITCHBURG – George B. “GB” Thomas, 83, passed away Thursday, June 1, 2017 in UMASS Medical Center, Worcester surrounded by family.
The funeral will be held Wednesday, June 7, 2017 from Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg with a service at 10:00 a.m. in Christ Episcopal Church, 569 Main St., Fitchburg. Calling hours are Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial is in Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, 569 Main St., Fitchburg, MA 01420.
FITCHBURG – George B. “GB” Thomas, 83, passed away Thursday, June 1, 2017 in UMASS Medical Center, Worcester surrounded by family.
Mr. Thomas was born October 2, 1933 in Fitchburg, the son of Simon and Anna (Boyaj) Thomas and was a lifelong resident. He was a 1951 graduate of Fitchburg High School where he played football. He received his Associate’s Degree in Engineering from Worcester Jr. College. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in the Korean Conflict for 3 years and continued for 6 additional years in the reserves. He received the United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.
George was employed as an Engineer for the former New England Telephone Co. for over 35 years until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the New England Telephone Pioneers and its golf league.
He loved landscaping at his home and keeping a perfect lawn. He was an avid Boston sports fan and was a member at the former Maplewood Golf Course in Lunenburg. He was a member of the Aurora Masonic Lodge in Fitchburg for over 50 years.
George was a lifelong and devoted member of Christ Episcopal Church in Fitchburg where he was parish clerk, acolyte, lay reader, vestry member and taught Sunday School. He and his wife were ushers for over 25 years.
He leaves his wife of 61 years, Joan (Niemi) Thomas; a son, David G. Thomas, and his wife, Deborah, of Shrewsbury; a daughter, Nancy J. Thomas of Fitchburg; three grandchildren, James D. Thomas, Jennifer A. Thomas and Lauren A. Sweeney; a great grandson, Ethan Gonzalez and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Miriam, Louise, Raymond and William Thomas.
