Ernest H. Vandergriff

December 7, 1949 — March 1, 2025

Fitchburg

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Ernest H. Vandergriff, known affectionately as Van, on March 1, 2025. Born on December 7, 1949, in Munich, Germany, Van spent most of his life in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, after growing up in Shirley, Massachusetts. A devoted husband, stepfather, and friend, Van’s bright spirit and generous heart touched many lives, and he will be deeply missed.

A man of honor and integrity, Van served his country as a four-year army veteran, first with the 173rd Airborne Infantry Brigade in Vietnam and then with the 10th Special Forces Group at Fort Devens. His commitment to public service continued in his career with the Massachusetts Department of Correction. Beginning as a Correctional Officer, Van rose through the ranks over 28 years, retiring as the agency's Chief of Staff. His dedication to his work was evident in his achievements, and he carried the same dedication into his later work as a Real Estate Agent with Foster-Healey Real Estate in Leominster. A graduate of Ayer High School, Van furthered his education with an A.S. from Mount Wachusett Community College and a B.S. in Criminal Justice from Westfield State University.

Van’s life was not only defined by his career accomplishments but also by his personal passions. An avid golfer, fisherman, and reader, Van found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was a committed fan of the Red Sox and Patriots. Despite his achievements and interests, what mattered most to Van was his humility and kindness. He was a selfless individual who always put others first. His compassionate nature and warm smile will be remembered by all who knew him.

Van leaves behind his loving wife of 35 years, Jacqueline Vandergriff, step-son Jeffrey Lovely, step-daughter Carla Mutter and her husband Joe. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edith and Henry Vandergriff.

Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, Fitchburg, is directing arrangements.
