Doris M. Legere Caouette

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30, Saturday, March 17 at St. Francis Church, Sheridan St., Fitchburg.

Calling hours will be held from 9:30-11:00 prior to the funeral at Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Francis Church, 63 Sheridan St., Fitchburg, MA 01420, in Doris’ memory.



Fitchburg- Doris M. (Caouette) Legere, 94, passed away on Wednesday, March 14 at her residence.

Mrs. Legere was born in Fitchburg on September 20, 1923 the only child of the late Thomas and Delia (Healey) Caouette. In addition to her parents, she was also raised by two beloved aunts, May and Margaret Healey. She was very active and athletic in her childhood; she enjoyed skating and skiing. She attended East Street School, Edgerly Middle School, and was a 1941 graduate of Fitchburg High School. Doris was enrolled in an accelerated program at Fitchburg State College, graduating in 1944 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education with a specialization in Science. While at Fitchburg State, Doris was Captain of the Field Hockey Team. After college, she taught 8th grade in Athol for three years. Some of her fondest memories were working with her teacher friends at Hazel Daigle’s Dog House at Hampton beach during the summers. On November 30, 1946, Doris married her high school sweetheart, Bob Legere. Together they raised a family and celebrated 60 years of marriage together, until his passing in 2007. Family vacations to York Beach, and trips to the Goldenrod, were family summer staples. Doris also enjoyed traveling to Europe with her husband.

Doris was an active volunteer as well as a substitute teacher at St. Francis Church in Fitchburg. She also volunteered at the Family Life Center in Cleghorn. Doris wore many hats, she was a Den Mother of the Cub Scouts, talented seamstress, loving wife and mother. The title she was so proud to earn was Nana, and later, Nana the Great.

The family would like to thank the battalion of home health aides, and hospice nurses who cared so lovingly for Doris, that she was able to remain comfortably in her home until her passing.

Doris is survived by her daughters, Jeanne Whitford and her husband Robert of Norwood, Christine Legere of S. Yarmouth, Marguerite Gabrieli and her husband Richard of New Ipswich, NH., grandchildren, Amanda Whitford Ahern and her husband Thomas, Angela Whitford Downing and husband Peter, Stephanie Legere Iannuzzi and  husband Michael, Sonya Legere Bird and husband Phillip, Marcus Gabrieli and partner Waleska Santiago, Ross Gabrieli, Michael Legere and wife Antonia, great grandchildren Maeve, Seamus, Annabelle, Kathie, and Joey.

Doris was predeceased by her son Robert T. Legere in 1995.
