Claire’s funeral Mass will be celebrated in Saint Bernard’s Parish at Saint Camillus Church, 333 Mechanic St., Fitchburg on Saturday, January 2, at 11:00am. Burial will follow in Saint Bernard’s Cemetery. Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg is directing arrangements.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital.
OBITUARY
Fitchburg – Claire H. (Hastings) Nelson, 97, of Fitchburg, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 28, 2015 at the Highlands in Fitchburg.
Claire was born on October 30, 1918, in Fitchburg, the daughter of the late Clarence and Rose (Gendron) Hastings. She graduated from Fitchburg High School with the class of 1936 and was a “Gold F” recipient. She competed in basketball, field hockey, volleyball, and bowling.
She worked in finance for the former Foster Grant Co. in Leominster, retiring in 1982. She also organized travel events and recreation activities for employees as well as the annual summer outings at Saima Park in Fitchburg.
Claire was Commander in the Navy Mother’s Club # 876 in Fitchburg. The club was awarded citations in recognition of outstanding welfare work in VA hospitals and with families in need, as well as volunteer services to naval hospitals and active personnel. Claire was an avid walker and enjoyed oil painting and crocheting afghans.
Claire leaves four sons, Ronald Nelson of Fitchburg, Richard Nelson and his wife Sandy of Hanford, CA, Steve Nelson of Fitchburg, and Ted Nelson and Laura Rice of Leominster; one daughter, Jane Emma and her husband Bob of Lunenburg; 13 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Waino I. Nelson; her daughter, Gale Normandin; her sister, Leonette Wood; and her brothers, Raymond and Bernard Hastings.
