Augustina (Tina) Traini Pellecchia, 95, died peacefully on February 20, 2018, in Sarasota, Florida, surrounded by her daughter Linda and son Barry. Tina was born in Arquata del Tronto, Italy, on Oct. 5, 1922, to Sam and Martha Traini, also from Arquata. She came to the United States when she was seven years old and lived in Daisytown, PA, where her father was a coal miner. She graduated from California High School in California, PA.
In 1945 she married Settimio (Babe) Pellecchia while he was in the service and settled down in Leominster, MA, with her entire family. Previously, Tina had contributed to the war effort by measuring precision ball bearings for B29s at the Cleveland Graphite Bronze plant. Early in their marriage, Tina and Babe were inseparable partners in their numerous businesses—Babe’s Ice Cream, the Leominster Motel, Babe’s Miniature Golf, and the West Boylston Motel.
Later Tina followed her passion: art. She developed an art teaching studio and gallery in Leominster and exhibited in several shows, most recently at the Fitchburg Art Museum. Tina was a versatile artist, equally at home with oil, watercolor, or acrylics. She specialized in portraits but also painted full-scale murals including one at the Christ Center in Sterling, MA. She was a gifted teacher who loved teaching both adults and children in her studio, her home, and a variety of other venues, including Mt. Wachusett Community College, the Boys Club, the Worcester Detention Center, and the Shirley jail among others. She was always concerned with those less fortunate than herself or in need of a sympathetic ear. Tina also volunteered at the Leominster Hospital, the Fitchburg Art Museum, St. Anna’s Parish Council, the Women’s Club in Leominster and Sterling, the Leominster Art Council, the Cultural City Club, and Christ Center in Sterling. In the last decades of her life, she devoted herself to religion. She regularly taught classes on understanding the bible and was actively working on a book on how to teach the Bible.
Tina was an inveterate traveler, who went not only to France, Germany, Spain, England, and multiple times to her beloved Italy, but also to more exotic places such as Kenya, Peru, Brazil, Columbia, and Israel.
Tina’s husband, Babe, died in 2013. She leaves a daughter, Linda Pellecchia and her husband David Stone of Philadelphia, PA; a son, Barry Pellecchia of Bradenton, FL; two granddaughters, Kim Carvette and her husband, Rob, of Norwell, MA, and Lynn Pellecchia of Cohasset, MA; and three great grandchildren, Caden and Clara Carvette, and Jack Kyler. She was much loved by her family and by so many others whose lives she touched.
