With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Anibal Luis Vera, age 63, known to those dear to him as "Papo", on February 23, 2024. Papo spent his life cultivating a world rich in love, laughter, and the simplest of joys. Born on September 15, 1960, in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, those closest to him saw him build a life he was proud of in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.
His journey to the “main land” was not just a geographic relocation, but an expression of resilience, demonstrating an unyielding determination to create a better life. Anibal's story was a compelling one, illustrating the strength of the human spirit defined by humility and hard work. His stubborn nature combined with his generous heart made him a uniquely endearing character.
His career took him from being a custodian at Fitchburg State College, where he worked with pride, to the fastest city cab driver, and finally to Concord Lumber, where his keen eye for detail was put to good use as a painter. His love for working on cars brought him to become a backyard or sidewalk mechanic. His knack for problem solving was an extension of his resilient spirit, and shaped his belief that with the right tools and a bit of elbow grease, anything can be brought back to life.
Yet, for all his accomplishments, Anibal's greatest joy lay in the simple pleasures of life. He was a man who loved to spend his time with his children, sitting outside with friends and family or simply feeding the birds. He found joy in making genuine connections, collecting odds and ends that he insisted were treasures and he was known for blaring his music with a contagious zest for life.
In the end, what mattered most to Anibal was his family. He was a devoted father and grandfather, a loving brother, a cherished uncle and a loyal friend. Anibal's kindness and warmth will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Anibal is survived by his sons Michael Luis Vera and Thomas Labaw, his daughter Dr. Jacqueline Rose Velez and son-in-law Dr. Miguel Velez III and his only granddaughter, Elianna Ava Velez. Also, Papo leaves behind his roommate Melissa Cloutier, and the mother to his children, Shannon Caisse.
His siblings Maribel Rodriguez and her husband Hector Rodriguez, Josefina Velez, Jose Velez, Alma Rosa Feliciano, Luz Lopez, Santo Matias, Julio Matias, Alexis Vera, Alberto Vera, Jorge Vera, Ruben Vera and his wife Angelica, and many nieces, nephews and cousins are also left to honor his memory. He was preceded in death by his parents, Aníbal Vera González and Luz Matías, and his brothers Joselito and Herminio Matias.
Words fall short of describing the void Anibal's departure has left in our lives. Papo was a man who understood the value of hard work, the joy of laughter, and the importance of family. His spirit continues to live on in the hearts of those he touched.
