Ada E. Nurmi Dunstan

October 30, 1917 — December 1, 2015

NURMI — A visitation hour will be held on Saturday, December 12, at 10:00 a.m. and a funeral service at 11:00 a.m in Faith United Parish, 820 Main Street, Fitchburg. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery after the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ada’s name will be gratefully acknowledged by Our Father’s House, Box 7251, Fitchburg, MA 01420.

Ada and her twin brother Gilbert were born in Chelmsford, MA, to Minnie Johnson Dunstan and Robert Dunstan, loving parents who came from England to No. Billerica, MA. They both taught her needlework skills that she honed throughout her life. After graduating from business school, she worked at Fort Devens prior to World War II.

After marrying, she kept the books for Arthur’s sign business until he partnered with David Wass. Ada was a devoted mother who sewed and knitted her children’s clothing, volunteered in school and community events, and fully engaged in the life of her church, Faith United Parish of Fitchburg. She cared deeply about the mission of the church to help others, and initiated or participated in programs for needy children and adults. For many years, she joined an active and vital group of women at the church who cooked suppers and Thanksgiving dinners, created fairs and attic sales, sold cookies and home made bread, and ran Our Father’s Closet, all to support less fortunate others.

She loved her house on Rindge Road and tended a lovely garden there for many years. She was an avid reader, embroiderer and recipe collector, and became legendary for her Santa Christmas cookies. She cherished her relationship with her English cousins, especially Dorothy Taylor, her “pen-pal” for 90 years, and Howard Briggs, who visited her as recently as October. A kind and compassionate mother and a fun-loving, loyal friend, she was eager to hear and support all of us, starting with a hot cup of tea, properly prepared.

She is survived by three daughters, Nancy, of Ketchikan, Alaska, Susan and her husband, Thomas Skrmetti, of Memphis, Tennessee, Elizabeth and her husband, Howard Stone, of Wenham, MA and daughter-in-law Sheila Keegan-Nurmi of Leominster, her grandchildren Ernest and Maura Stone, Jennifer and Richard Meserve, Jonathan and Alisha Skrmetti and Sara Skrmetti and great-grandchildren Hannah, Shannon, Katrina and Samuel. Her dear son, Gilbert, and infant granddaughter Sadie predeceased her. Her family is grateful to the kind care-givers who lovingly served her the past three months.
