Viewing hours will be at the Brandon Funeral home in Fitchburg on Wednesday July 19 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. followed by a Mass at St. Anthony’s Church at noon. Burial will be next to her beloved husband, George, at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. A reception for all family and friends will follow at the St. Anthony’s function hall.

Marion L. Hughes, 96, died peacefully and comfortably in her sleep on July 15 surrounded by family at the home of her daughter and son in law Margaret and Robert Mitchell of Marblehead where she lived the final four years of her distinguished life.

Born November 16, 1920 to Josephine and Luigi Trapani, she was a lifelong resident of Fitchburg. She married George E. Hughes on Nov. 29, 1945 and the couple celebrated more than 50 years of marriage. Together they owned and operated the Sandwich Shop serving downtown Fitchburg merchants and shoppers breakfast and lunch with a warm personal flair. In previous years, she worked as a clerk at Shacks Clothiers in downtown Fitchburg. The couple was members of the Amvets and Holy Rosary Church and loved to go dancing. In her later years, she enjoyed trips to casinos where her success at the slot machines delighted her to no end.

She is survived by her two children, Margaret Mitchell of Marblehead and Kenneth Hughes of Marblehead, three grandchildren, Matthew Mitchell of Marblehead, Jennifer Mitchell of San Diego, California and Roxanne Hughes of Miami, Florida, a daughter in law, DebraLee Corcoran of Marblehead and a brother Jasper Trapani of Fitchburg.

She is predeceased by her husband, George Hughes, a brother, Samuel Trapani and her parents, Josephine and Luigi Trapani.
